Astigmatic lenses feature two different powers a sphere and a cylinder power which have to be aligned at a certain axis in order to provide clear vision.

Many astigmatic lenses use gravity to help achieve alignment of the powers, contact lens manufacturers do this by “ballasting” or weighting the bottom of the contact lens so it sits in the correct position in the eye.
